2025 Steam Deck Setup

As an enthusiastic supporter of the Steam Deck, I have dedicated considerable time to exploring the best hardware modifications, software enhancements, and accessories to optimize my overall experience. I would like to share my current Steam Deck OLED setup in hopes of inspiring others to enhance their own experience.

Hardware Modifications

  • 2TB M.2 2230 NVMe SSD - Upgrading from my standard 1 TB drive to this new one was a straightforward process. I successfully cloned my drive using an NVMe SSD Enclosure, following the detailed instructions provided in this Reddit thread.

  • GuliKit Hall Effect Joysticks - The new joysticks feel incredibly smooth, alleviating any concerns about stick drift. I found the upgrade to be surprisingly straightforward, especially after following this iFixit video tutorial.

  • JSAUX Transparent RGB Back Plate - This upgrade focused on aesthetics rather than just functionality, but it appears to help keep my Steam Deck running cooler.

  • 1 TB Micro SD Card - This card holds all of my ROMs for emulation.

  • Deckbuttons - Replacing your Steam Deck buttons can be somewhat challenging, depending on your level of experience. However, the end result is well worth the effort, as they look fantastic once completed.

Software Enhancements

  • Decky Loader - homebrew plugin launcher for the Steam Deck. Some of my favorite plugins are:

    • Audio Loader - allows you to replace Steam UI sounds and add music when outside of a game.

    • AutoFlatpaks - allows you to manage flatpaks on your Steam Deck without having to navigate to Desktop Mode.

    • HLTB for Deck - displays game lengths according to How Long To Beat.

    • ProtonDB Badges - displays ProtonDB badges based on how games will run on the Steam Deck.

    • SteamGridDB - allows you to change Steam artwork while in Gaming Mode.

    • VibrantDeck - allows you to adjust screen saturation and vibrancy.

  • EmuDeck - a tool that allows me to emulate older games on my Steam Deck.

  • Non-Steam Apps - in Desktop Mode, you have the ability to add Non-Steam applications to your library, allowing you to launch them seamlessly in Gaming Mode. Here are some of my personal favorites:

    • Firefox Browser - allows you to access a web browser in Gaming Mode. I use this primarily to watch Netflix.

    • Discord - allows you to access your Discord messages in Gaming Mode.

    • GeoForce Now - enables you to play games with enhanced settings that are not supported by the native hardware of the Steam Deck.
